An extraction set is one of the most used instrument groups in any dental clinic. Choosing the right mix reduces chair time and helps protect bone and soft tissue. Here is how the main instruments differ.
Extraction forceps
Forceps grip the crown or root and are shaped for specific teeth. Upper and lower forceps differ, and there are patterns for molars, premolars, incisors and roots. Clinics usually stock a set that covers upper and lower, left and right, adult and child.
Elevators
Elevators such as the Bein pattern are used to loosen a tooth or lift a root before or instead of forceps. Handle shape and blade width change how much control the clinician has.
Luxators and periotomes
These thin, sharp instruments cut the periodontal ligament so a tooth can be removed with less force. They are central to atraumatic extraction where preserving bone matters, for example before an implant.
Building a set
- Forceps for the teeth you treat most often
- Two or three elevator sizes
- Luxators or periotomes for atraumatic work
